Certified Microwave Repair Across the GTA

Microwave Safety Warning: Microwaves store dangerous high-voltage charges in their capacitors — even after being unplugged. Never attempt DIY internal repairs on a microwave. Always have a trained technician service internal components. Call PRT Appliance for safe, professional repair.

Modern microwaves — especially over-the-range and built-in models — are sophisticated appliances that combine microwave cooking, ventilation, and lighting systems in a single unit. When one fails, the impact on your kitchen routine is immediate. PRT Appliance provides professional microwave repair throughout Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area, handling everything from a dead magnetron to a jammed door latch.

Our technicians are trained to safely work on microwave internal components, including the high-voltage capacitor discharge procedure that must be performed before any internal work — a step that is genuinely dangerous without proper training and equipment. We service countertop microwaves, over-the-range units (OTR), and built-in microwave drawer and wall models from all major brands including Samsung, LG, Panasonic, GE, Whirlpool, Bosch, Miele, Sharp, and more.

We provide an upfront quote after diagnosis, use quality replacement parts, and back every repair with a warranty on both parts and labour. For over-the-range and built-in models especially, professional repair is almost always more cost-effective than the complexity and expense of full replacement and reinstallation.

Microwave Problems We Repair

From a magnetron failure to a stuck door latch, our trained technicians handle the full range of microwave faults safely and professionally.

Microwave Not Heating

A microwave that runs — the light comes on, the turntable rotates, the timer counts down — but doesn't heat food is one of the most common repair calls we receive. The most likely causes are a failed magnetron (the component that generates microwaves), a faulty high-voltage diode, a burned-out high-voltage capacitor, or a failed thermal cut-out. These are all high-voltage components that must be handled by a trained technician.

Sparking Inside the Cavity

Visible sparking or arcing inside the microwave cavity — especially at a specific point on the interior wall — is almost always caused by a burned or damaged waveguide cover (the plastic or mica panel that covers the magnetron opening). Food splatters can burn through this cover over time. In some cases, the cavity itself may be damaged. We inspect the full interior, replace the waveguide cover, and check for further damage.

Turntable Not Rotating

When the glass turntable stops rotating, food heats unevenly and hot spots develop. The cause is usually a faulty turntable motor, a broken or worn drive coupler (the plastic piece connecting the motor to the turntable ring), or debris jamming the roller guide. We clean the roller guide assembly, test the turntable motor, and replace any failed components to restore even, consistent heating.

Door Problems

A microwave door that won't close, open, or latch properly is a safety issue — most microwaves will not operate if the door is not fully engaged. Common door issues include broken door latch hooks, a failed door switch (interlock switch), a warped door, or a damaged spring. Because microwave door switches are part of the safety interlock system, a faulty switch can also prevent the unit from starting entirely even when the door appears closed.

Display Not Working

A blank, dim, or flickering control panel display — or buttons that don't respond — usually indicates a failed control board, a defective display panel, or a damaged membrane switch. In some cases, a tripped fuse causes total display failure. We diagnose the electronics systematically, identifying whether the issue is with the display component itself, the main control board, or a power supply fault.

Loud or Unusual Noises

A microwave that buzzes loudly, makes a grinding sound, or rattles during operation may have a failing magnetron (which produces a loud buzzing as it nears the end of its life), a worn turntable motor, loose internal components, or a faulty cooling fan that's hitting debris or worn bearings. We identify the source of the noise and repair or replace the responsible component before it causes further damage.

Microwave Repair FAQ

The answer depends on the type of microwave. For inexpensive countertop models under $200, a major repair like a magnetron replacement may not make financial sense. However, for over-the-range microwaves ($500–$1,200+) or built-in models, repair is almost always the better option — especially since replacement also involves installation costs. For mid-range countertop models and all OTR/built-in units, our technicians will give you an honest assessment after diagnosis so you can make an informed decision.
If you see sparks or arcing inside your microwave, stop using it immediately. First, check that there's no metallic material inside (foil, metal trim, some packaging). If there's no obvious metal source, the most likely cause is a burned or damaged waveguide cover — the rectangular panel inside the cavity, usually made of mica or hard plastic. Food debris can burn through it over time, causing arcing at that spot. This is a relatively inexpensive repair. Do not continue running the microwave with sparking as it can damage the magnetron or cavity walls.
Microwave repair costs in Toronto range from approximately $80 to $250 for most common issues. Simple fixes like a waveguide cover replacement, turntable motor, or door switch are at the lower end. A magnetron replacement — the most expensive microwave component — tends to be at the higher end. PRT Appliance provides a written quote after diagnosis so you know the exact cost before committing to the repair. We'll also let you know honestly if the cost doesn't justify fixing the specific unit.
Yes. Over-the-range (OTR) microwaves are one of the most common types we repair, and they're also the type where repair makes the most financial sense — installation costs alone can run $200–$400 for a replacement unit. We service OTR models from all major brands, including repairs to both the microwave components and the integrated ventilation fan and exhaust system. We work carefully around your cabinetry and countertop to complete the repair cleanly and without damage.
A magnetron failure is the most common cause, but it's not the only one — and it's important to test all components before replacing parts. The high-voltage capacitor, the high-voltage diode, the thermal cut-out (thermal fuse), and even the door interlock switches can all cause a "runs but doesn't heat" symptom. A qualified technician tests each component systematically. Replacing only the magnetron when the diode has actually shorted will result in the new magnetron failing quickly too.
